Energy efficiency An add-on to Quodus space optimization

Stop cooling empty rooms. Run the AC by who is in the room.

Most campuses run their air conditioning on a fixed schedule for the whole building, or switch it on and off by hand. In the buildings we measure, 40% of the hours it runs, the room is empty. Quodus already counts every room and reads the timetable. Connected to the plant, it switches each unit off when its room empties and back on before the next class.

Ten hours of air conditioning

Quodus switches those hours off

  1. 01

    Integrate

Connect to the building management system or the AC system's web panel, or take our API and wire it to your own systems.

  2. 02

    Measure the baseline

2 months counting how many AC hours go to empty rooms, room by room, before anything is switched.

  3. 03

    Optimize

Rules turn the AC off when a room is empty, and on when the timetable says a class is about to start.

01The waste

Most buildings cool on a fixed schedule. Not to who is in the room.

One floor, one day, run the way most buildings run it: every unit on a fixed schedule, from 7:30 AM to 8 PM. Where a unit runs with nobody under it, a warning goes up in the room; then a rule acts, and it is switched off. The day stops five times to show what happens.

Time9 PM

Building schedule 7:30 AM – 8 PM

Select an hour or a letter to go to it.

  • AC on, room empty
  • Switched off by a rule
  • On before a class
  • Counted person
  1. A. The schedule starts the day. 7:30 AM · Building schedule: AC on in all 8 rooms. The first class is at 8 AM, and some rooms have nothing until later. With Quodus: Each unit comes on 15 min before its room's first class: 5 rooms at 7:45 AM, the last at 9:45 AM.
  2. B. A class nobody came to. Classroom 117: Booked 10 AM – 12 PM. Nobody came, and the schedule cools the room all the same. With Quodus: Off at 10:15 AM, after 15 min empty. Back on at 11:45 AM, ahead of the next class: 1 h 30 min of AC saved.
  3. C. A class out early. Lab 114: Class over at 1:20 PM, 40 min early. Nothing until 4 PM, and the AC stays on. With Quodus: Off at 1:35 PM, after 15 min empty. Back on at 3:45 PM, ahead of the next class: 2 h 10 min of AC saved.
  4. D. People with no booking. Classroom 103: Nothing booked after 3 PM. AC run from the class timetable would go off on 6 people. With Quodus: 6 people counted, so the AC stays on. Off at 5:25 PM, 15 min after they leave.
  5. E. The last classes out. 3 rooms: Last class out at 5:50 PM. The building schedule keeps the AC on until 8 PM. With Quodus: All 3 off at 6:05 PM: 5 h 45 min of AC saved before the schedule would have stopped them.
  6. The AC ran 100 h today, 40 h of it in empty rooms: 40%. The rules switched off 29.3 h of it, and no room with people in it went without.

02Integrate

Three ways in. Whichever one your campus runs.

Quodus switches the AC through whatever already controls it: the building management system where there is one, the AC system's own web panel where there is not. Or take our API, and your own team wires it into your systems instead of us.

  • 01

    BMS connection

Quodus talks to your building management system in the protocol it already speaks, and sends each unit on or off, room by room, through the controls the plant already has.

    Such as

    • BACnet
    • Modbus
    • KNX
    • OPC UA
    • Siemens Desigo
    • Schneider EcoStruxure
    • Johnson Controls Metasys
    • Honeywell
  • 02

    AC web panel

No BMS? Most AC systems have a central controller with a web panel. Quodus connects to it and switches the split units it already runs.

    Such as

    • Daikin iTM
    • Mitsubishi AE-200
    • LG ACP
    • Samsung DMS
    • Toshiba
  • 03

    API

Your team does the wiring instead of us: occupancy by room, the timetable and the waste, to connect to your own systems, dashboards and rules.

The names are examples of what campuses run, not a list of certified integrations. Tell us what yours runs.

03Baseline

First, 2 months of measuring. Before a single rule is switched on.

With the connection in place, Quodus reads what every unit does and puts it against who was in the room. For 2 months nothing is switched: the point is to know, room by room and hour by hour, how much of the AC runs for nobody.

The week: 200 h of 500 h of AC in empty rooms, 40%.

At the end of the 2 months you have your own figure, from your own buildings, to turn into kWh and cost with your energy team. It is the number the rules are then measured against.

04Optimize

Then the rules. Off when the room empties, on before the class.

Two rules do most of the work, and each institution sets its own timings. They run on the counts the sensors already take every five minutes and on the timetable the platform already reads.

If a room has been empty for 15 min

Then its AC goes off

If a class is booked to start in 15 min

Then its AC comes on, so the room is ready

People in the room keep it on

Booked or not. The rules follow the counts, so a study group in a free room is never left without.

05The platform

Built on the space platform. Same sensors, same timetable.

Energy efficiency is an add-on to Quodus space optimization, not a system of its own. The sensors counting each room and the timetable integration are already there; the add-on connects them to the air conditioning.
